The World Will Never Understand

The world will never understand or appreciate the critical role of parents in education. As time goes on it seems that government schools, teachers’ unions, and media outlets would rather parents not know what their children are being taught at school. That will never be the case here at Cinco Christian School. Our philosophy of education is rooted in Deuteronomy 6:6-7, “These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up” (New International Version). We believe that parents are an essential part of our school community.

The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) is a U.S. government agency that compiles educational data every four years in what is called the Nation’s Report Card. The NCES just released some troubling post-COVID-19 educational data. Since the COVID-19 era, reading scores for 4th grade students nationwide have dropped by 5 percentile points. This is the largest decrease in reading scores in 32 years. This decrease in reading has taken place because many schools and school districts were shut down for an extended period of time during the madness that became known as the “COVID-19 crisis.”

This data should be horrifying to parents who depend on government schools for 100% of their children’s learning. At Cinco, we believe that parents are their children’s primary educator. We exist to partner with parents and walk alongside them. Therefore, we believe parents have a God-given responsibility to work with their children at home. Children that consistently practice reading on a daily basis live a more enriching and rewarding life than those that do not. This data is less frightening for parents that work with their children. Regardless of their ability level. When parents and teachers have the same academic expectations there is a higher likelihood that their children will be successful. The apex of learning is when parents and schools partner together for student-focused and Christ-centered education. However, at Cinco, we believe that success is not simply measured by personal achievement. Our true success is measured by how our lives bring glory and honor to Jesus. That includes our commitment to our children’s education. That is something the world will never understand.
